Objective: The PPGF participates in the International Cooperation Program of Brazilian Universities. We have already received students from Argentina, Benin, Haiti, Guatemala, Mozambique, Peru, Panama, Paraguay, and other countries. Currently, the PPGF has three international doctoral students, from Haiti, Mozambique, and Benin, as well as four master’s students from Haiti, Argentina, Colombia, and Paraguay. These students were selected through the OAS and the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities. In addition, in 2025, the PPGF hosted two students from the University of Panama and one student from the National University of Catamarca – Argentina, through the Move La América Program, Call 07/2024. They remained in the program for three months.

Project Title: Unraveling the Challenges: Diagnosis and Control of Viruses in Cassava and Yam in Brazil
Objective: Establish an international cooperation agreement with DSMZ. Three institutions (UFRPE-PPGF, Embrapa Cassava and Fruits, and DSMZ) participate in the CAPES-PROBRAL project. Five sandwich Ph.D. scholarships and three postdoctoral fellowships were granted by CAPES-DAAD.

Objective: Establish an international cooperation agreement with Louisiana State University. In April 2024, Professor André Gomes, leader of the Postharvest Pathology Research Group at the Graduate Program in Plant Pathology at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE), carried out a technical visit to the Department of Plant Pathology & Crop Physiology at Louisiana State University. The mission aimed to strengthen partnerships for the development of collaborative research projects with LSU researchers and to promote student and faculty exchange between the two institutions.

Objective: Conduct a sabbatical year by Dr. Marco A. S. da Gama (UFRPE) as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Plant Pathology & Crop Physiology, Louisiana State University, focusing on studies to understand the mechanisms responsible for copper resistance in Burkholderia species.

On February 25, 2025, Dr. Marco A. S. da Gama delivered a lecture entitled “Taxonomy of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria” to students of the LSU Agricultural Center, conducted via videoconference.

Move La América Program – University of Panama

Internships for International Master’s and Ph.D. Students

Objective: Establish an international cooperation agreement through the approval of the Move La América Program Call. Three students were selected to carry out graduate research activities in 2025. The general objective is to offer internships of three to six months for the development of parts of dissertations and theses related to plant pathology.

S. da Gama participated as an instructor in the international course “Diagnóstico molecular y manejo de enfermidades bacterianas y fúngicas en cultivos agrícolas” offered by the International Summer School (Escuela Internacional de Verano), UP, from March 10 to 14, 2025.

 

Visits to Foreign Institutions (2017 – 2024)

Louisiana State University (LSU) Agricultural Center – In 2017, professors Marco Aurélio Siqueira da Gama and Delson Laranjeira visited LSU with the objective of establishing partnerships with researchers at the institution. During this visit, a collaboration was established among phytobacteriologists Dr. Marco Aurélio Siqueira da Gama (PPGF), Dr. Elineide Barbosa de Souza (PPGF), and Dr. Jong Hyun Ham (LSU).

University of California, Riverside (UCR) – In 2019, Professor Marco Aurélio Siqueira da Gama visited UCR on a CAPES-PrInt UFRPE mission, aiming to present PPGF’s research and faculty, strengthen existing partnerships, and establish new collaborations. The mission lasted one week and included meetings with several professors from the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology, including the Department Chair, Dr. Katherine Borkovic.

Colorado State University, Fort Collins – In 2021, Professor Marcos Paz Saraiva Câmara visited Colorado State University to advance collaborative research between CSU and UFRPE.

National University of Catamarca (UNCA), Argentina – In March 2024, Professor Marco Aurélio Siqueira da Gama traveled to Argentina to establish an international cooperation agreement with the Plant Pathology Chair of the Department of Plant Health, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (FCA), UNCA. The goal was to promote student and faculty exchange in higher education and research in Plant Pathology.

Louisiana State University (LSU) Agricultural Center – In April 2024, Professor André Angelo Medeiros Gomes visited LSU with the goal of strengthening partnerships for the execution of collaborative research projects in postharvest pathology and encouraging student and faculty exchanges between the two institutions.

Leibniz Institute DSMZ – German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (Braunschweig, Germany) – In November 2024, Professors Rosana Blawid and Marcos Paz Saraiva Câmara visited DSMZ with funding from the CAPES/PROBRAL/DAAD program to reinforce collaborative research between DSMZ and UFRPE. The bilateral Brazil–Germany project is coordinated by Professor Rosana Blawid (UFRPE) and Dr. Paolo Margaria (Leibniz Institute).
